Prayers addressed to the saints help cope with insomnia and fall asleep faster. Which prayers should be read to eliminate this problem? Find out in this article.
Orthodox believers turn to prayers at the first signs of insomnia. There are several saints to whom one can turn in prayers for peace and improved sleep. It is recommended to read prayers for the upcoming sleep before bedtime and to turn to St. Irenarch, the hermit of Rostov, and to the Seven Youths of Ephesus.
Why pray to these particular saints? The answer lies in their lives and in the miracles that occurred thanks to their intercession.
St. Irenarch, the hermit of Rostov, lived in the 17th century in Russia. At the age of 30, he took monastic vows and devoted himself to monastic service since then. The saint endured severe trials, including hunger and constant prayers. It is said that he slept only one hour per day and also wore heavy chains and shackles. His life was full of miracles, and after his death, many healings occurred from his relics.
The Seven Youths of Ephesus: Maximilian, Iamblichus, Martinian, John, Dionysius, Exacustodian (Constantine), and Antoninus, are honored not only in Christianity but also in Islam. They lived in the 3rd century and were sons of Roman patricians who had been friends since childhood.
At that time, paganism was the dominant religion, and upon learning about the Christian faith of the youths, Emperor Decius ordered their execution. However, before carrying out the sentence, he granted them time to reflect, hoping that they would renounce Christ. But the youths remained steadfast in their faith.
They decided to hide in a cave on Mount Ohlon, where they spent time in prayer. The youngest of them, St. Iamblichus, occasionally went into the city for bread. Learning that they were being sought, the youths voluntarily surrendered and were walled up in the cave without food and water.
Two hundred years later, when the persecution of Christians ceased, workers conducting construction on Mount Ohlon accidentally opened the entrance to the cave. The youths woke up as if they had just fallen asleep, unaware that so much time had passed. According to legend, they appeared "radiating beauty."
When St. Iamblichus came into town to buy bread, he was arrested for paying with ancient coins. This event led to an investigation in which the Bishop of Ephesus participated. The priest realized that through this miracle, God revealed the mystery of the resurrection of the dead.
Upon learning of the miracle, the new emperor visited the youths, and after conversing with them, they once again fell asleep until the General Resurrection.

Troparion, 4th tone:
As a valiant martyr and servant of God, Irenarch, Rostov's star, in seclusion and in chains, pleasing the Lord and receiving from Him miraculous grace, with hymns of praise we honor you and, running to you, we implore: father, holy one, pray to Christ God to save our souls.
Kontakion, 2nd tone:
Having endured numerous hardships in life, exile, seclusion, and iron fetters, you, Irenarch, patiently endured, leaving us an example of valiant suffering. Illuminating with miracles all who come to your honorable tomb with faith, we call to you: rejoice, Irenarch, wondrous father.

O holy father Irenarch! We earnestly pray to you: be our intercessor and ask from Christ God peace, tranquility, prosperity, health, and salvation, and protection from all visible and invisible enemies. O great servant of Christ, valiant martyr, newly revealed through miracles, our father Irenarch, praise of the Russian land and adornment of Rostov! Who would not be amazed at your patience and self-sacrifice? Troparion, 4th tone:
Great miracles of faith, holy seven youths, in the cave, as in a royal palace, you dwelt and, having died, remained incorrupt, and after many years arose, as from sleep, for the witness of the resurrection of all people. By those prayers, O Christ God, have mercy on us.
Kontakion, 4th tone:
Having overcome the corruptible, you received the gift of incorruption. Having died, but remaining incorrupt, you arose after many years, and all the faithful, praising you, glorify Christ.
In the troparion of the seven youths of Ephesus, 8th tone:
Preachers of piety and proclaimers of the resurrection of the dead, pillars of the Church, seven blessed youths, we glorify you with hymns: you, after many years, like from sleep, arose, proclaiming to all the resurrection of the dead.
In the kontakion of the seven youths of Ephesus, 4th tone:
Having glorified you on earth before Your second and terrible coming, O Christ, you showed the glorious rising of the youths, unknown to many, revealing to them incorruptible garments and bodies, and assured the king of the truth of the resurrection of the dead.
Prayer:
O, majestic holy seven youths, praise of Ephesus and hope of the whole universe! From the height of Heavenly glory, look upon us, remembering you with love, especially upon the young Christian souls, entrusting their parents to your intercession: send down upon us the blessing of Christ God, who said: "Let the children come to Me." Heal the sick, comfort those who mourn, preserve their hearts in purity, fill them with meekness, and sow in their hearts the seed of confession of God, that they may grow from strength to strength; and grant all of us, who stand before your holy icon and pray to you, to receive the Kingdom of Heaven and there, with unceasing voices, to glorify the Magnificent name of the Most Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.
